Why Berlin?
As not beeing born but moved ten years ago to Berlin I would like to provide the reader with some impressions and tips about the capital. It will all about Berlin from A-Z, about stages, sparetime, restaurants, theatres, art, culture, literature, music, fashion, politics, shopping, trends, living. Mz persons of attention are: Berliners himselves who should know everything already.
New Berliners, who want to discover their city. Tourists visiting Berlin who do not have much time and do not like to run around with a guide under their arm. Also visitors who want or must work here. Also people on sabbaticals who are searching here. Language students who need to learn German and want to live with Germans. Also Exberliners who want to catch up the latest spirit. Those who want to commend on something are welcome to do so. Have fun in Berlin, it´s worth going.

Year of American Culture in Berlin



„american season 2004“ is an initiative of the Federal Minister for Culture, Dr. Christina Weiss, in conjunction with the exhibition, „MoMA in Berlin“. Scheduled to take place during the exhibition period, this program of American cultural events was conceived as an expansion and enrichment of what promises to be an exceptional exhibition. The Berliner Festspiele have already commenced work on the program's coordination, and numerous cultural institutions in Berlin have been asked to participate in the program which seeks to offer audiences a panoramic view of art and culture in twentieth-century America. One of its main objectives is the reflection of the traditional, yet complex relations between Germany and the United States. Federal Minister Dr. Christina Weiss has taken on the auspices for the project as a whole.

The following institutions have agreed to participate in the Berlin program: Akademie der Künste, American Academy, Art Forum Berlin, Berliner Festspiele, Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, Deutsche Guggenheim, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Filmmuseum Berlin, Contemporary Fine Arts gallery, Hebbel am Ufer, Kunst-Werke Berlin e.V., Maxim Gorki Theater, Neuköllner Oper, Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Sophiensæle, Universität der Künste, Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz et al.

Recent event in 2004 is the MoMa - Exhibition in Berlin.

Looking for a new home in Berlin? An apartment or a house?

There are 3 general ways to do it:
1. Online via Internet e.g. Try immobilienscout24.de to find it or to offer a home.
2. Through newspaper. The most common ones are 'Tagesspiegel' or 'Berliner Morgenpost'.
The last one you also can read online.
Make sure to look out for an offer from a private person or so called 'Hausverwaltung' to save the courtage of an agent (3% plus 16%VAT).
3. Advertise your favourite dream home and let them offer it to you via chiffre.

Another reasonable solution is the homepage of every univesity.
They offer useful links to institutions, student halls, etc.
In case you cannot aford a own flat, look for a so called 'Wohngemeinschaft' or
check the Yellow Pages under the blog 'Zimmervermittlungen'. There you can find
furnished rooms with own bathroom and shared kitchen for a limited time to look for the dream accomodation in Berlin.

A fancy place to be is the restaurant "Maxwell" on Bergstrasse.
Located in a courtyard of a former brewery. Garden to sit outside in summer.
Nouvelle cuisine on high level, also the prices. Worth it!
